Bethlehem Skateplaza Grand Opening

Bethlehem, Pa. The Office of Parks and Public Property for the City of Bethlehem, Pennsylvania is pleased to invite the public (adults and children of all ages) to a carnival and concert event to benefit the Bethlehem Skateplaza. General admittance and parking is free.

Date:
Saturday, June 19, 2010 from 5:00 p.m. to 10:00 p.m.

Location:
Ice House Sand Island, 56 River Street, Bethlehem, PA 18018

Indoor and outdoor activities:
DJ, characters, food and drink, baked goods, carnival games, activities and prizes

Concert times (doors open 15 minutes prior to each show):
5:45 p.m. – Billy Bauer Band
6:45 p.m. – Stevie and Chris Ruggiero, Variety Entertainers
7:45 p.m. – Roche Harbor Light
8:45 p.m. – Revelation

Concert ticket prices:
$2.00 per show (pay at the door, seating is limited)

The Skateplaza is anticipated to be a world-class venue, unrivaled in its progressive design and immense size. The plan addresses the needs of the community and the desires of action sports’ enthusiasts to exercise in a safe, secure environment. Benefits include strengthening community partnerships, providing positive youth development and contributing to the health and physical wellbeing of residents in a multi-use, park like setting. “With the help of the Bethlehem Greenway project and Mayor John Callahan, The Bethlehem Skateplaza will be the new design standard for Skateboarding and BMX venues,” says Ralph Carp, Director of Parks and Public Property for the City.

Bethlehem Skateplaza Ceremonial Groundbreaking

The Bethlehem Skateplaza Ceremonial Groundbreaking will be on Wednesday January 6th at 3:30pm — 1325 Steel Ave., Bethlehem PA (across from the entrance to the Sands Casino-Resort).

There will also be a reception from 4pm-5pm where we will be holding a Q&A for the public and press, the debut of the Bethlehem Skateplaza website and general information on the project.

Old School Skate Session

Were you skating when Mike McGill invented the McTwist? If you answered yes, you might want to stop by the park this weekend — Sunday, June 9th.

The gRaPeViNE says, some “old school” Lehigh Valley skaters, including some local legends, plan on making their way down to the Nazareth borough skate park for an unorganized and informal non-gathering.. a good Old School Skate Session. If you’re in the neighborhood stop by, and if you’ve got an old deck, bring it. If you know an old school skater (friend, stranger, mom, dad, whatever) – tell him or her to show up.

So far, the weatherman is calling for sun with temps in the upper 70’s, it should be a great day to skate!

JULY 4, 2008….MAJOR NEWS UPDATE!!!!!!!Nazareth Borough Council held its monthly workshop meeting last night and put on the agenda for Monday’s business meeting the approval for a new addition to the park. A 12′x27′x3′ MINI PIPE!!!! Monday night they will be putting the piece out for bid to be accepted by the August meeting. If all goes well, it should be installed by mid September!!!!!!!!! PLANS SHOULD BE POSTED IN THE NEAR FUTURE!!!!!!!!!

Recently a few boarders were fined for skating on posted private property. The police will be taking a more aggressive stance regarding these types of violations. You now have a park. Use it! I’m including a copy of the Borough ordinance as well as a map showing the “NO SKATE ZONES” for your consideration. Even with school open, still getting 30-50 skaters a night! Please remember to keep the park clean and please obey all rules.

One Hiccup But So Far Sooooo Good!

Its been two weeks and we’re getting 30-50 skaters a day. The park is the busiest area in the park except for maybe the pool. July 16th we experienced a temporary shut down but all concerns were settled and we reopened without further incident. Garbage has been cleaned up nightly. THANKS GUYS! Please remember to follow all posted rules. It will benefit all. Best time to get in good runs is first thing in the morning before the crowds show up. There have been a few injuries so please remember to skate within your ability!

What a Day! What a great turnout and what a diverse group of people, a U.S. Congressman (thanks Charlie, hope the kids had fun), Borough Officials, Township Representatives, businessmen, moms, dads, babies, boys, girls and yes, even dogs! I need to thank all who helped especially Rob Mertz and Sydrome Distribution, Amateur Athelete and Curt”s Cycle for all the decks, wheels, trucks, shirts , banners and stickers (hope everybody left with something), Sam’s Club, Wegmans, Walmart, Giant, D & R Beverage and Nazarth Beverage for the water and soda, and Dunkin Donuts for what else….donuts! The day wouldn’t have been as successful without all of you! We raised an additional $1600 plus dollars from L & T Enterprises, Amateur Athelete, Kayla and Kelsey Kemmerer, Jim & Carmel Karch and others who anonymously donated to our jar! Thanks to all donors and sponsors.

Comments and suggestions are welcome and desired. We would like to know what the park may need or needs changed. Please visit often for news on special events, meeting dates and anything else relatingto the park.
